If there is one thing I have learned as a curly girl, travel is not always my friend. There are apps to help you out, sometimes it’s difficult to determine the weather, humidity levels and temperature where you are going. Then you have to pack a plethora of hair products to match the weather!

When it comes to a Caribbean vacation, humidity is guaranteed. We just returned home from a 10 day all inclusive vacation at Sandals Grenada Resort. (I’ll post a more recent Sandals review of our second visit in the near future.) While there, I had several women approach me and ask how my hair lacked the frizz they noticed in their own.  My short answer to them was: product!

Packing List: tropical curly hair products

When I packed my toiletries for our humid tropical Caribbean vacation, I was conscious of space, weight and necessity. What were the 3 to 4 curly styling products I could not live without? Here are the 5 items I packed (in 3 to 6 oz travel bottles):

  1. Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Defrizzing Shampoo -duh! 🙂
  2. Conditioners: DevaCurl One Condition Original & Giovanni 2chic Repairing Hair Mask, Blackberry and Coconut Milk. Depending on the amount of time in the pool, I switched between the two of these. The repair mask was awesome the days my curls were dry, due to the chlorine and chemicals.
  3. Leave-In Conditioner: Kinky-Curly Knot Today Leave-In Conditioner/Detangler
  4. Gel: Kinky-Curly Original Curling Custard

Kinky-Curly products are my go to styling agents almost every day. They rarely let me down, so why should they in the high humidity Caribbean islands?

Travel Hair Dryer & Diffuser

As always, I packed my mini travel hair dryer and accordion diffuser. It worked great the first 7 days and then silently died. (I think I forgot to change the voltage. :() I had a moment of fear and then decided to try out the in-room hair dryer.

Oh. My. Goodness. My collapsible diffuser fit the full size hair dryer and my curls looked amazing! Tip: If you are staying at a Sandals Resort, they provide a Sunbeam hair dryer in the bathroom. The attachment is permanently on the dryer; however, my diffuser fits over it. Save space in your luggage and leave that dryer at home!
