First of all, I’m so sorry I’ve been missing for a few weeks. I had several curly hair products I wanted to finish up before testing new styling products. I have also been taking an online web development class. That’s another subject for a different day. There is never enough time in a day, right?
Lately, I’ve been struggling to understand my 2c 3a low porosity curls. Since I started my curly hair journey about one year ago, my curl pattern has changed around my face. I now have tight, little spirals everywhere. I even postponed my curly girl cut this month because I felt those curls needed time to grow. The rest of my hair has remained the same, but feels super dry.
Through my research, I found that low porosity hair can be sensitive to too much protein. In an effort to use curl styling products that are specific to my hair needs, I came across this conditioner by Shea Moisture. It’s called Baobab & Tea Tree Oils Low Porosity Protein-Free Conditioner. Below are all the cool details on this natural curly hair styling product. wash day with protein-free conditioner
I washed my hair with Giovanni Invigorating Shampoo. This product is fantastic as a cleanser. It removes all the styling products on your curls and leaves your scalp all tingly, clean.
I then applied the Shea Moisture Low Porosity Conditioner. It has a natural, fresh scent. My husband commented how nice my hair smelled. Starting at my ends, I finger combed the curly hair conditioner through my ringlets. Shea Moisture recommends you leave it in for 3 minutes. The perfect amount of time to finish up my shower. I rinsed the conditioner out thoroughly. Afterward, my scalp felt really clean. Even 30 minutes later when I was diffusing my hair, my scalp felt freshly washed.
I followed up my shower routine with my Simple Curly Girl Styling Routine: 3 Products. Unfortunately, my full size hair dryer was out of commission. Thankfully, I had my travel hair dryer handy.
Protein-free conditioner curl results
In an effort to be transparent, the photo to your right is 7 hours after I washed my curls. Immediately after diffusing, my roots were soft and full of volume. There was still a bit of crunch to my ends. I happen to like that as it keeps my spirals tight.
The weather on this particular day was overcast, 100% humid, very windy and in the 60’s. We had just come back from a 45 minute walk outside AND had gotten caught in the rain. I had not worn my hair in a pineapple, but let it blow in the wind. Sometimes, it just feels good to have the wind in your hair!
As you can see, my curls retained their shape. I did lose quite a bit of volume and my hair looks much longer than it normally does. However, my hair is soft, feels healthy and smells great!

day 2 & 3 results
I am not one to spend much time on curly hair refresh days. Many mornings I am at the gym or heading to the grocery store. I prefer to wear my hair in a pineapple or bun. Unfortunately, my hair felt dry and had quite a bit of frizz on day 2 and day 3. So, up my hair went! However, my hair still felt clean and soft. Perhaps a few refresh curly hair products would help. I’ll try that another time and get back to you.
As this is my first time trying the Shea Moisture Low Porosity Protein-Free Conditioner, I’m not giving up yet. The cleansing shampoo I used might have been a bit too much. My first thought is to change out that portion of my regimen and see what happens. Specifically, adding the Protein-Free Shampoo. What do you think of my results? Have you tried this product before?
ps: vendor love
Hair Band: I absolutely adore my mint colored headband. I wear it all year round. Under Armour no longer makes the design I am wearing. However, I found a vendor on Amazon with a similar design in the same color.
Enso Rings: I like to match my accessories and these silicone rings go with everything.
Peach Nail Polish: I recently found this fun, spring color in my favorite nail polish, Mineral Fusion. It’s called Juicy Peach. I plan on wearing it this Sunday for Easter. It’s a soft, pastel with cool tunes that match well with so many skin tones and fashion styles.
