What He Wore Most

This was the true workhorse of the trip. Nick wore it almost every single day — for sunrise walks in Rome, breezy ferry rides in the Amalfi Coast, and cold evenings in Venice. It’s the perfect layer for Italy in April: warm but not bulky, packable, and great over a tee or sweater.

What He Would Skip Next Time

We packed one “dressier” shirt for evenings out — and it ended up staying in the suitcase most of the time.

Nick wore this once, maybe twice, the entire trip. April evenings were cool enough that he preferred wearing his Merino half-zip sweater over a tee, which still looked elevated for dinners and date nights. For spring Italy travel, especially with lots of layers, a button-down just wasn’t necessary.

What he’d pack instead:
Another short-sleeve tee or a lightweight performance long-sleeve — items he actually reached for daily.

If your partner doesn’t naturally reach for button-downs at home, they likely won’t wear one in Italy either.

Our Laundry Strategy

Where We Did Laundry

Each Airbnb had a washing machine, and we washed once per week. Most Italian apartments include drying racks instead of dryers, which worked perfectly with our quick-dry fabrics.

Why This Strategy Works

How Long It Took

A typical load:

Tip for Other Travelers

Pack one or two lightweight hangers or laundry clips — it speeds up drying and keeps garments from slipping off radiators or racks. We packed a travel clothesline but mainly used the drying racks supplied by the host.

Laundry once a week made the capsule feel fresh and kept packing simple.
