One of our favorite things to do is to discover free local events and places in Charlotte, North Carolina. I have an ongoing list of date ideas. I place them sporadically on the calendar and am pleasantly surprised when they pop up.

This past weekend, I had the Charlotte Botanical Gardens earmarked for Saturday morning. We had a few errands to run in the South End (Warby Parker), but had the morning open. The UNC Gardens open at 9AM and parking is free anywhere on campus on the weekends.

The UNC Charlotte Gardens consist of 10 acres of land with wooded trails and gardens and a greenhouse with exotic plants.  It is a beautiful spot for a picnic and would be a great place to escape the heat during the summer months.

Rhododendrons were in full bloom and the forest was popping with color. It was an overcast day, which just made the woods appear even more green than normal.

Overall, we spent an hour and half touring the gardens. We would have spent more time had it not been so cold. This did make for a wonderful excuse to visit Not Just Coffee in the Atherton Mill before we hit up Warby Parker.
